BIRMINGHAM, AL- The Birmingham City Council is cordially inviting all citizens within the City of Birmingham and surrounding areas to participate to join them at Regions field for an educational experience that will outline how the city’s budget process works.
This first ever four part series, will give citizens the opportunity to understand exactly how a budget is selected, as the city gets ready to enter a new fiscal year which begins July 1st. During Tuesday’s council meeting Mayor Bell began the budget process by presenting the council with his budget proposal. The council will now work to select a budget that will fit the city’s needs.
“Our citizens need to understand what our duties are as it relates to collaborating with the mayor through various measures to produce an operating budget,” Council President Johnathan Austin said. “We have a fiscal responsibility to provide them with vital information that addresses their communities as a whole.”
The topics included in the hearings will illustrate why balancing the city’s budget requires a great deal of direction, and constructive input from citizens. In addition to hearing from department heads on how the budget process works, citizens will also be able to ask questions at the end of the hearing.
