BIRMINGHAM, AL- As the 2014-2015 fiscal year draws nearer, the Birmingham City Council is working tirelessly to ensure that a budget is in place. The council received the mayor’s proposed Operating and Capital Budget on May 13th, a week earlier than required by the law. The council has since begun its deliberation in order to pass the budget prior to the start of the fiscal year, July 1st.
“As the mayor and council work together for the betterment of our city, it is crucial that we carefully analyze the budget so that funds are allocated properly,” Council President Johnathan Austin said. “I am confident that the council will continue its work and will meet the approaching deadline.”
A third work session will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 4 p.m. in conference room D & E. During this session, councilors will discuss budget items surrounding the proposed department cuts, funding for non-profits, and cutting merit increases. At last week’s session councilors were asked by the chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, Councilor Valerie Abbott, to submit any questions they had to Mr. Jarvis Patton, Chief of Operations by close of business on Friday.
President Austin further stated, “Mayor Bell and his staff have fully cooperated with the council making for a seamless process this year; We hope to have responses to the council’s questions before Thursday’s work session allowing us to move forward to get a balanced budget passed on time.”
