Birmingham City Councilor Sheila Tyson to Receive the 2014 Spirit of Democracy Affiliate of the Year Award
BIRMINGHAM, AL – A big honor for Birmingham City Councilor Sheila Tyson. She has been selected to receive the 2014 Spirit of Democracy Affiliate of the Year Award. The Spirit of Democracy Awards are presented to individuals and organizations who have demonstrated a consistent commitment to creating balance in the democratic process and supporting the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation’s mission and vision of making civic participation a cultural responsibility and tradition.
“It is an honor to receive an award as prestigious as this,” Councilor Tyson said. “As a councilor I am continually striving to teach the community about the importance of civic participation. I truly believe that as civic participation numbers increase we will begin to see a variety of those benefits in our local communities.”
The annual awards gala will take place Tuesday, October 7, 2014 in Washington D.C. Councilor Tyson will be among a group of select individuals representing a variety of platforms amongst their local communities.
