BIRMINGHAM, AL – A new era is underway at Boutwell Auditorium, as a local church will begin holding regular services in the building beginning today. The Rock Church, led by pastor Mike McClure Jr. will have one service at 11 a.m., and then services will continue each week with one at its current Forestdale location at 9 a.m., and another at 11:30 a.m. at Boutwell.
“Six years ago, 10 of us came together and we prayed that we would do something special in this city, and six years later our dream is coming true, said Pastor McClure Jr. “We’re finally becoming a church in the heart of the city, with a heart for the city.”
The Rock Church was formed in 2009 with just 10 members. It has grown significantly and now serves more than 1,000 people every Sunday. The church recently signed a five-year contract with the City of Birmingham, in which they will pay the city $52,000 per year to hold worship services at the Boutwell.
“I am excited and enthusiastic about the Rock Church coming to the historic Boutwell Auditorium,” said Councilor Marcus Lundy Jr. “ Pastor Mike McClure Jr. is an anointed, and gifted man of God; And to have the Rock Nation worshipping in the Central Business District opens up a world of opportunity for the kingdom and gives those seeking a word another vehicle by which they might receive it.”
Church leaders agree saying that by moving downtown, they hope to serve those who wouldn’t normally have a way to get to church. For more information on the Rock Church, visit http://therockcity.org/home/.
