New “Gear Up” program aimed at preparing 6th & 7th graders for college through a $19M federal grant
The “Gear Up Birmingham” program is sending a message to over 3,000 sixth and seventh graders that it’s never too early to prepare for college. Also known as Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program, it is a part of a $19.6 million dollar federal education grant preparing middle-school students to transition to Birmingham academy programs. It’s free and offers tutoring, mentoring and financial education to learn how to pay for college.
