BIRMINGHAM, AL- A special Memorial Day event with a unique background, is set to take place in District 9. On Monday, May 25 at 10 a.m. Councilor Marcus Lundy is inviting the public to join him at 1502 Slayden Avenue in the North Sherman Heights community to witness the raising of a flag that has a special meaning for the community. The flag was sent from the U.S. Capitol at the request of Congresswoman Terri Sewell. This particular flag flew over the White House May 22, 2014 in the honor of Mr. Preston Gadson. Mr. Gadson was the longtime storeowner of Gadson Grocery Store, which was thought to be the last “mom & pop” neighborhood grocery in the community. Mr. Gadson passed away November 29, 2012.
“Mr. Gadson was the example of what it means to be a passionate leader in the community,” said Councilor Lundy. “He took pride in not only his community, but in his country, and he was very adamant about flying the U.S. flag outside of his store everyday to pay respects for all those who have served our country.”
In addition to the flag ceremony, councilors are also inviting veterans to enjoy a local attraction for free. In honor of Memorial Day, all active and retired military, as well as their dependents, will receive free admission to the Birmingham Zoo with proof of valid military identification. The Birmingham City Council salutes those that have served, and look forward to taking time out to say thanks to our storied heroes.
