BIRMINGHAM, AL– Birmingham has a rich history of birthing many citizens who become catalysts for change. Willie Perry also known as Birmingham’s own Batman, took change into his own hands literally and set out on missions to help those in despair. Perry was well-known for cruising around the City of Birmingham searching for ways to help stranded motorists and giving free rides in his customized 1971 Ford Thunderbird, touted the “Batmobile Rescue Ship.” During his rides around Birmingham, he also used the car to provide gas, jumper cables and tools to help citizens restore their broken down vehicles. His duties didn’t stop there as he could also be seen giving free rides to heavily intoxicated drivers, and provided transportation to elderly people with doctor’s appointments, just to name a few.
Tonight at Old Car Heaven Councilor Sheila Tyson will join Greater Birmingham and surrounding communities at 6 p.m. to celebrate Willie Perry Day where there will be fundraising efforts to help restore and preserve Perry’s “Batmobile Rescue Ship” which was placed in storage after his untimely passing in 1985. Councilor Tyson, along with other community activists will also create a foundation for the youth of Birmingham to begin vigilant community service projects in Perry’s commemoration.
“It is very important that we keep Willie Perry’s memory and legacy alive in our communities as a whole,” Councilor Tyson said. “He was the epitome of a good Samaritan, and we can all keep the value of his goodwill going in our daily efforts as citizens. Restoring the ‘Batmobile’ and getting our youth involved in a foundation geared toward his acts of kindness is a great way to start.”
