“Rescue Ship” Restoration- Willie Perry Car Project Underway
“Batman” is back in Birmingham, well, his car is. The Willie Perry car, known as the “rescue ship”, is about to get a complete restoration thanks to efforts by Councilor Sheila Tyson. In the 1980’s, Willie Perry took his 1971 Ford Thunderbird and outfitted it with gadgets galore earning him the nickname “Batman of Birmingham”. He spent his spare time driving around helping anyone in distress. Whether out of gas or needing a ride, he answered the call for help. The city is honoring Willie for his community efforts by restoring the “rescue ship” to it’s former glory. His family wants to continue his legacy and is starting a foundation called “Wheels of Change” to help donate used cars to single parents who need transportation. If you’re interested in donating contact Councilor Sheila Tyson’s office at 205-254-2358.
