BIRMINGHAM, AL – As we welcome fall and the cool weather that it brings Birmingham City Councilor William Parker is inviting you to join him for an evening of smooth jazz featuring Eric Essex. Jazz on the Patio will take place Sunday, Sept. 27th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Brownsville Heights Community Center located at 9225 Airport Road Birmingham, AL 35217. This event is free and open to the public and will provide a fun atmosphere that the entire family can enjoy.
“Attendees of this event are in for a sure treat as one of Birmingham’s very own shares his musical talents with us for this community event,” Councilor Parker said. “This event will also provide residents with the opportunity to mix and mingle with their neighbors as we are continuously working to build a greater sense of community.”
That sense of community is exactly what Eric Essex hopes to portray through his music. Based in Birmingham, Alabama, Essix began as a fusion and contemporary jazz bandleader in the early 90s. He appeared on the scene with two recorded albums of light pop, fusion, and modern material for Nova. His subsequent releases for Zebra Records showed a shift from his established smooth funk to a more mature, blues style with a distinct Southern feel.
“I’ve used my career as a musician to try and be an ambassador for Birmingham through music,” Essix says. “The ultimate goal for me is to change somebody’s perception about what Birmingham is. We have progressed in such a positive way and I hope that my performances showcase our growth.”
