BIRMINGHAM, AL –  Before winter takes her official toll, it’s not too late to get your flu shot! Birmingham City Councilor Sheila Tyson is continuing her quest with Walgreens to educate the community and bring good tidings of health to everyone this holiday season. A FREE flu shot clinic will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at City Hall located at 710 North 20th Street in Downtown Birmingham. The clinic will take place on the 3rd floor in Conference Room A.

“It is very important that our citizens understand the value of having this vaccination,” Councilor Tyson said. “The statistics from flu cases are very alarming, and I want to make sure that as a city we are providing our citizens with the essentials to stay healthy during the winter months. When our communities are healthy we all thrive, and that’s what it’s all about.”

Tuesday’s clinic, will be the first of several free clinics that Councilor Tyson will host over the next several months in partnership with Walgreens and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The clinics will not only take place in Birmingham, but they will also be held in Montgomery and Selma in efforts to reach those who may not be aware of the benefits of the vaccination.

According to reports from the CDC, there are documented benefits from the flu vaccination, including reductions in illnesses, related doctors’ visits and missed work or school. The CDC recommends annual flu vaccines for everyone 6 months and older. While some of the viruses spreading this season are different from what is in the vaccine, vaccination can still provide protection from flu related symptoms and might reduce severe outcomes such as hospitalization and death.
