Birmingham City Council President Johnathan Austin Announces Changes to Council Committee
Governmental Affairs Committee Created; Committee Chairs Reshuffled
Birmingham, Ala. – Today, City Council President Johnathan Austin officially announced the realignment of several Council Committees, as well as new committee chairmanships and assignments. The changes are designed to encourage fresh new perspectives, and to ensure each Councilor has the opportunity to gain invaluable insight into the responsibilities of each committee and issues that come before them.
In early November, President Austin began a review of the current Committee structure and assignments and realized an overhaul was necessary. As a result, he decided to consolidate some committees, create new ones and rotate committee chairs and members. These changes are effective immediately.
“I believe these changes will reinvigorate the Council and provide for even greater efficiencies to move issues forward,” President Austin said. “Also, as we approach the two-year mark of our current term, the timing was right for change.”
Some of the most significant committee changes include:
- The creation of the Governmental Affairs Committee. The GAC will be responsible for vetting legislation and setting the Council’s legislative priorities.
- The Education Committee is now a standalone committee charged with strengthening the Council’s relationships with schools and libraries. Education was formerly part of the Administration & Education Committee.
- The Economic Development and Budget & Finance committees have been combined.
- Public Safety & Transportation have been combined to form a single committee.
