BIRMINGHAM, AL – In efforts consistent with promoting nonviolence and excellence amongst our youth, Birmingham City Council President Pro Tem Jay Roberson is inviting the public to join him on the greens for the 1st Annual Saving Our Sons Golf Tournament. The tournament will be held on Monday, April 18, 2016 at Ballantrae Golf Club located at 1300 Ballantrae Club Pelham, AL 35124. The tournament will begin at 8 a.m.
“I am looking forward to being able to take part in an event that will benefit such a great cause. The future of our youth really depends on the amount of work that we put in to develop them both in and out of school, and this tournament will provide funding to do just that,” Councilor Roberson said. “I understand that it fully takes partnerships such as this one to really expand our reach as we continuously work to have an impact on our youth.
The tournament will raise money to provide Little “Free” Libraries throughout the Birmingham communities. The libraries will be situated in parks, and will allow residents to pick out a free book to enjoy. There are currently over 25,000 little libraries around the world, and Councilor Roberson along with Carnelle Howell, Director, of Community Partnerships for GPS Educational Services are working together to bring the libraries to Birmingham.
“Connecting the public with free reading materials and resources is what we do, and this project is another way for us to bring the library into the communities that we serve,” Mr. Howell said. “The libraries will not only provide educational benefits, but they will also help to promote a greater sense of community amongst neighbors, who may take the opportunity to meet in their local parks to read a book.”
In addition to Monday’s golf tournament, there will be a pre-tournament kickoff for the youth that will be held on Sunday April17th at Oxmoor Valley Golf Course located at 100 Sunbelt Pkwy, Birmingham, AL 35211. The golf tournament will run from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.
