New Program Launches in Birmingham to Help Students Attend College
There’s now a program in the city of Birmingham that not only benefits all students in the Birmingham City Schools system, but parents of these very students as well. GEAR UP which stands for gaining early awareness and readiness for Undergraduate programs is a grant awarded by the U.S Department of Education to high risk communities to develop programs to prepare low-income, minority and first generation students for college. 8th and 9th graders who are enrolled in the GEAR UP program are exposed to a variety of different resources such as tutoring, mentoring, summer academic enrichment and financial literacy skills.
