District 7
Jay Roberson - District 7 Representative / President Pro Tempore
Birmingham City Council President Pro Tempore James “Jay” Roberson, Jr. is Chair of the Planning and Zoning Committee and is a member of the Parks and Recreation and Utilities Committees.

To enhance the overall visual appearance of the City of Birmingham, Councilor Roberson has requested a record number of abatement of property nuisances. He has also collaborated with his colleagues to address public safety legislation involving second hand smoke and an anti-texting while driving ban.

An advocate for young people, the White House Office of Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnership has identified Councilor Roberson as a leader “well-poised” to make mentoring a priority. He has also received President Barack Obama’s Volunteer Service Award for his involvement in the National PEN or PENCIL Program.

In January 2012, Councilor Roberson in partnership with Mayor William A. Bell, Sr., Alabama Power, BB&T, Samford University, Sam’s Club and Samaritan’s Feet, commemorated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as part of the National Day of Service.

The civic and corporate leaders hosted a Shoes of Hope Distribution for the National Day of Service. Students pre-registered through local schools and 450 received a new pair of athletic shoes, socks and a unique message of hope.

In 2011, City of Birmingham school students, with the assistance of Councilor Jay
Roberson, honored the late Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth with actions. Students
took up the cause of non-violence, petitioning their peers to sign and abide by a
non violence pledge and participate in community activities.

In 2010, Roberson unveiled the "100 Days of Nonviolence" campaign in the Birmingham metro area. The campaign concluded on MLK Day 2011 without one person under the age of 18 being killed through a violent act. Councilor Roberson has partnered with Dr. Bernice A. King as the “100 Days of Nonviolence" campaign has resonated nationally.

In addition to his duties as a Councilor, Roberson serves as Governmental Affairs Director for the Birmingham Association of Realtors. In this role, he heads up the office of public policy and advocates on behalf of the association and its members.

Roberson received his B.A. in Telecommunications from Alabama A&M University in 1996 and was the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs during 1992-94. He and his wife, Niva, have three children, Lia, Tré, and Ava.
