Birmingham City Councilor Sheila Tyson to Join Reverend Al Sharpton for the Grand Opening of NAN Headquarters

BIRMINGHAM, AL- City Councilor Sheila Tyson is continuing her efforts to stand up for voter rights. Councilor Tyson will join Reverend Al Sharpton on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 10 a.m. for the grand opening of the National Action Network (NAN), Freedom Summer 2014 office. The public is invited to attend the grand opening and view the headquarters, located at 2013 1st Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35210.
“As president of the local NAN chapter, I am honored that they have chosen Birmingham as the site of their training headquarters, “ Councilor Tyson said. “I am confident that this new office will have a major impact on not just our city, but all across the country.”
The new NAN headquarters will serve as the central training hub for Freedom Summer volunteers being deployed to communities across the country. NAN will focus on ten key states where organizing efforts will include voter registration, educating individuals on issues on the ballot, fighting voter suppression and supporting individuals in getting out to the polls in November.
“Even before I became a council member, I have always had a passion for educating the public on their voting rights,” Councilor Tyson said. “I am grateful that I am able to take part in efforts that will continue to expand educating citizens about the importance of being a registered voter.”
In addition to the ribbon cutting ceremony, a Community Mass Rally will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday at the 16th Street Baptist Church located at 1530 7th Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203.
