BIRMINGHAM, AL- In an effort to find a solution to the increase in rates for Birmingham city employees and retirees, councilors have asked that a resolution be added to Tuesday’s agenda that would rescind the most recent benefit changes.
During a special called meeting Thursday night, councilors discussed their options for address the rising costs. In previous years the city’s revenue was able to cover additional medical increases. But in 2014, health claims largely outweighed funds that came in to support the contributions, which added to the city’s deficit by $5.6 million.
