BIRMINGHAM, AL– If you’re looking for a fun, family friendly event to display your patriotic pride we’ve got the perfect event in mind. Birmingham City Councilors will take part in an Independence Day Concert being put on by the US Air Force’s own Band of the West. The concert will take place Thursday, July 2, 2015 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Southern Museum of Flight. The free events will not only include a performance from the one of a kind band, but there will also be kid friendly Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) based aviation activities as well as face painting, balloon animals and more.
“This event is definitely one that the public will not want to miss. It’s not everyday that you get to hear the patriotic sounds of the Band of the West,” Councilor Rafferty said. “I am beyond honored to take part in such a fantastic event that highlights all of our heroes both local and national.”
The Band of the West is a 45-member ensemble that represents the Air Force by performing for formal military ceremonies, educational clinics, and public concerts throughout the Southern United States. At every performance they offer a wide range of entertaining music to their audiences. The band’s repertoire consists of music from the Renaissance through the present day, from symphonic band literature to Broadway musicals, and from Sousa marches to today’s popular hits.
“The members of the band are all highly skilled professionals coming from colleges and universities all over the nation to serve in the U. S. Air Force,” said Elizabeth Grady, Events Manager for the Southern Flight of Museum. “The Concert Band brings a uniquely motivating experience to military and civilian audiences throughout Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida by combining pride in the Air Force story with a love for music and education, and we are honoring that there are making a special appearance at this event.”
