Love Cajun Food? Here’s Your Chance To Enjoy Great Food and Music, and It’s All For a Great Cause!

Untangle your beads, dust off your masks and shake out your feather boas! Mardi Gras may have passed but there is an event coming to the Magic City that is full of Southern Louisiana flavor. This weekend prepare to indulge as hundreds of ambitious young ladies raise funds for Girls Inc. at the 6th Annual Cajun Cook Off on Saturday April 9, 2016 from 11am to 2pm at Railroad Park in Downtown Birmingham. Relish in a family friendly environment and enjoy live music by Zydeco and the Swamp Poppas. You will also have the chance to catch a feature performance by the talented Girls Inc. participants. Connie Hill, President and Chief Executive Officer for Girls Inc. said this event is without a doubt the best way to enjoy the spring weather and delicious food all while giving to great cause.

“The Cajun Cook-off is our largest annual fundraiser, and each year we look forward to expanding this event to make it both memorable and fun for all who attend,” said Connie Hill, President and Chief Executive Officer for Girls Inc. “Through this year’s event participation and fundraising efforts, Girls Inc. of Central Alabama it is our hope that we will raise almost $80,000 to support our efforts to provide vital and innovative educational programs to school-age girls in Central Alabama.”

Between 20 and 25 teams of amateur cooks will prepare an array of delicious Cajun-inspired dishes in the taste-testing contest. The teams will compete to take home trophies for the best gumbo, jambalaya, and dessert as well as best overall Cajun dish. This year, attendees will also get to compete for the title of Top Fundraiser or Most Social. Each ticket holder will receive his or her own fundraising page via Swell Fundraising, creator of The Smart Party fundraising software, and the individuals who encourage the most ticket sales or share the event most frequently on social media will take home prizes as well. Tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-10. They can be purchased at All proceeds from the event will go directly to Girls Inc. here in Birmingham to fund programs that inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold.


Girls Inc. of Central Alabama is a nonprofit organization providing center-based and outreach programs to school age girls. The organization focuses on helping girls gain life skills, develop self-confidence and learn to compete in an ever-expanding world. Key program areas include health and wellness, economic literacy, and college and career preparedness.
