BIRMINGHAM, AL – The highly anticipated Summer Jams returns to Ensley this weekend with a stellar lineup of nationally renowned recording artists. The event began three years ago as an initiative by District 9 Councilor Marcus Lundy, Jr. to promote unity, highlight economic development potential and celebrate the rejuvenation movement of Ensley’s historic downtown. Summer Jams 2016 will take place Saturday, August 20th from 2p.m. to 7p.m. in downtown Ensley (at the corner of Avenue F and 19th Street Ensley). Attendees will have the opportunity to experience a free concert by Motown recording artist and Birmingham native Sebastian Cole, along with Alabama bands Lee Baines and the Glory Fires, and Just a Few Cats featuring Alvin Garrett and Logan. Organizers have coordinated the event as part of a concentrated effort to draw people back into Ensley’s historic downtown and increase awareness that it is a vibrant, safe and viable commercial center.
“At the heart of this event, Summer Jams is more than an annual block party; it’s an opportunity for residents, supporters and visitors to celebrate Ensley in its true light,” said Councilor Lundy. “Historic landmarks, the emerging art and entertainment scene, faithful businesses and Jazz roots are all major parts of Ensley’s identity. August 20th is an opportunity to celebrate Ensley’s past, present and future as one unified city. Supporters will have a chance to join the renaissance for themselves and those curious about the revitalization movement get to feel it firsthand.”
Immediately before the concert, from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m., attendees will have an opportunity to discover local artisans, small business vendors and civic organizations at a mini-market called the Ensley Renaissance Festival. The mini-market is hosted by Birmingham Young Creatives (BYC) and will take place in the former Ensley West Police Precinct at 616 19th Street Ensley. Summer Jams will also feature street vendors, grand prize giveaways and an “Open House” highlighting downtown Ensley businesses. Participating food vendors are Lazy Boy Barbeque, Magic City Sweet Ice, Naughty But Nice Kettle Corn Co., Nola Ice, Off the Rip (chicken and waffles) and Travis’s Chicago-Style Bear Burgers and Polish Sausages.
Event partners include Birmingham City Council, REV Birmingham, Birmingham Mountain Radio, Summit Media, B.E.A.T., Bethesda Life Center, Color Project Ensley, Ensley Alive, Ensley Revitalization Community, Ferrill African Wear, KUUMBA Community Art and Oasis Community Garden.
