Summer Jam is an initiative by Councilor Marcus Lundy to promote unity, highlight economic development potential and celebrate the rejuvenation movement of Ensley’s historic downtown.
“In the past four years, it’s been an honor to showcase all the promise, rich culture, economic potential and life that Ensley has to offer. Summer Jam has been an excellent way to reveal the true heart of this community to Birmingham, and we’re calling people to experience that magic one more time,” said District 9 Councilor Marcus Lundy. “This is more than a block party. Historic landmarks, an emerging art and entertainment scene, faithful businesses and Jazz roots are all parts of the Ensley story. August 19th is our chance to celebrate Ensley’s past, present and future as one unified city.”
Organizers have coordinated the event as part of a concentrated effort to draw people back into Ensley’s historic downtown and increase awareness that it is a vibrant, safe and viable commercial center. Musical guests from previous years have included both national, regional and local artists from a diverse set of genres, including Algebra Blessett, Alvin Garrett, Todd Simpson & Mojo Child, Gip Gibson, Sebastian Kole, Lee Baines & the Glory Fyres, Just A Few Cats and many more.
Summer Jam 2017 will also feature street vendors, an “Open House” highlighting downtown Ensley businesses and grand prize giveaways. Confirmed food truck partners include Dirty Red (Cajun cooking), Granny’s Fish & Grits, Magic City Sweet Ice and Kin Folks Grille & Catering.
Event partners include the Birmingham City Council, Ensley Alive, Ensley Merchant Association, B.E.A.T. and REV Birmingham.
