BIRMINGHAM, AL— Councilor Sheila Tyson will be holding a press conference to address the recent series of deadly shootings in District 6. Early on Wednesday morning, 15-year-old Miracle Sada McNeal was killed after a nearly 40 shots were fired into her home where she was lying in bed. She is the 10th child under the age of 18 who has been killed in violent incidents in Jefferson County this year.
Citywide there have been 91 homicides in 2017, on pace to exceed the 104 people killed in Birmingham in 2016. These high numbers come just two years after Birmingham saw a record low number of killings in 2014, with 62 homicides. Councilor Tyson hopes to bring community members together to discuss ways in which to end violence in District 6.
“This has gone too far. The senseless killings in our communities need to stop,” Tyson said. “I know people have information that could help catch the people who did this. It’s time the community comes together and puts a stop to violence in our streets.”
