BIRMINGHAM, AL— The Council held its second budget workshop on Wednesday, May 24th to review both the capital and operating budgets. The Council will submit a balanced budget to Mayor Randall Woodfin.
All nine councilors were present and agreed that many of the city’s partners should be restored to level funding in the 2018-19 operating budget. Several organizations such as REV Birmingham, Urban Impact, Vulcan Park, the Fair Housing Center, and the Birmingham Business Alliance either had their funding eliminated or reduced.
“Our partners should be supported and guided through this transitional phase to ensure that the work that they are doing will be sustained,” said Council President Valerie Abbott.
The Council has proposed an across the board reduction in each department of less than 1.50 percent to ensure that specified partners are restored to level funding, neighborhood associations have funding to continue to operate and to complete neighborhood projects, and the overall integrity of the city’s priorities remain intact.
The Council is requesting that the Mayor continue the Five-Year Street Resurfacing initiative that was promised to the citizens in 2017.
