The Birmingham City Council is now accepting applications and resumes to fill the unexpired term of President Pro Tem Jay Roberson

BIRMINGHAM, AL – Beginning today, August 21st, the Birmingham City Council will accept applications and resumes from District 7 residents who are interested in filling the unexpired term of President Pro Tempore, Jay Roberson. Council Pro Tem Roberson’s resignation is effective September 10th 2018 and it is the Birmingham City Council’s priority and goal to fill this particular district vacancy as soon as possible.

Each applicant must be able to meet the qualifications and eligibility requirements under Birmingham’s Mayor Council Act when taking office. The person appointed to fill the vacancy “shall, on or before … the Tuesday next following the date of his or her appointment, qualify by making oath that he is eligible for said office and will execute the duties of same according to the best of his knowledge and ability. …” (Mayor Council Act of 1955, Section 3.03, as amended.)

Sec. 3.04. – Eligibility.

To be eligible to hold office if appointed, “Councilmen shall be qualified electors of the city, at least 21 years of age at the time of their election, and shall hold no other public office except that of notary public or member of the National Guard or naval or military reserve. If a councilman shall cease to possess any of these qualifications or shall be convicted of [a] crime involving moral turpitude, his office shall immediately become vacant.”
