Birmingham, AL — Council President Pro Tem William Parker has arranged for a bus to take residents to a show cause hearing at the Jefferson County Courthouse for a matter revolving around waste disposal practices by Britt Demolition and Recycling Inc. in the vicinity of the Airport Hills community.
The hearing is set for May 10 at 10:00 a.m. in courtroom 330. The bus will be departing the Brownsfield Heights Community Center at 9:00 a.m. (9225 Airport Road, Birmingham, AL).
According to the lawsuit, which was filed by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) against the company, “The Defendant has failed to address several key issues that are required by ADEM regulations and remediation of the site has not begun.”
At the hearing, the court will hear from representatives of Britt Demolition and Recycling as to why the company should not be held in contempt of the court order that was issued on September 23, 2018 to begin remediation efforts.
“This is obviously an issue that impacts people living in the Airport Hills community and is a matter of public health,” Parker said. “We want to make sure all our residents are given the opportunity to attend the hearing because it has a direct impact on their quality of life.”
