The Birmingham City Council will be holding a special-called meeting on Friday, May 29 at 9:30 a.m. to vote on extending the city’s face covering ordinance.
The ordinance, which was first approved by the Council on April 28 and went into effect on May 1, is set to expire at 11:59 p.m. on Friday.
This past week, Jefferson County has seen an increase in the number of cases as business and industries have begun the process of reopening. Council President William Parker has continued to push for increased testing throughout the city and believes that face coverings are another important component in the fight to prevent community spread.
“When you wear a face covering while you are out in public, that is an intentional act of kindness because you’re helping to protect those around you,” Parker said. “We can’t legislate morality, we just want our citizens to understand the importance of covering their face when they are in a public space. We’re all in this fight together. So please, let’s help keep each other safe while we are out there supporting our local businesses that are beginning to reopen their doors to the community.”
The ordinance that will come before the Council on Friday would extend the face covering order until Friday, June 12.
