As part of District 1 Councilor Clinton Woods’s ongoing Ready, Set, Read Initiative, his office is partnering with I See Me, Inc. and Better Basics to provide books for elementary and middle school students.

The children’s books and supplies giveaway will take place on Saturday, August, 15, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Smith Middle School (1124 Five Mile Rd, Birmingham AL 35215).

The District 1 “Ready, Set, Read” Initiative was launched last year in partnership with Huffman Academy and Better Basics. During the 2019-2020 school year, a total of 60 second-grade students received small group instruction, three days per week, on reading, phonics, and comprehension through the Better Basics “Reading Intervention Program.”

The continued goal of this learning initiative is to encompass a series of programs, partnerships, and events designed to improve the reading proficiency and yield major improvements in reading proficiency, test scores, classroom grades, attendance, and behavior.

Councilor Clinton Woods says now, more than ever, it’s important that we support our students with the tools they need to succeed.

“Obviously school is going to look a little different this year,” Woods said. “It is incumbent upon our entire community to come together and support our students, school faculty and parents as we continue to navigate our way through this public health crisis. I am proud to partner with these great organizations to make sure students have access to books and supplies while they continue their education, be that remotely or in the classroom.”
