Contact: Kim Garner
The Birmingham City Council will be holding a public hearing to discuss the FY2021 Budget today at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers.
For anyone who would like the speak, the Council is asking people to sign in from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the third floor of city hall. Due to the health concerns presented by COVID-19, there will be strict social-distancing guidelines in place.
Only those who sign in will have an opportunity to speak. The meeting will be live streamed on the Birmingham City Council Facebook page for those wanting to watch the meeting virtually.
This public hearing is the first of several that will be held over the course of the budget process.
Councilor Valerie Abbott, chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, said it’s vital to have community input during the process, especially with the challenges presented by the ongoing public health crisis.
“These hearings are important because we want to hear the public’s opinion of the budget and how money is being allocated,” Abbott said. “We do want people to remember we are projecting a $63 million deficit this year as a result of the public heath crisis. In the past, the budget hearings have been a time when people came to ask us to fund a project for them. I’m not sure how much that will happen this year.”
