Birmingham City Council President William Parker and Pro Tem Wardine Alexander are pleased to announce, starting next week, modified schedules for 12 parks and recreation centers will go into effect. At one time, the centers were slated for closure. The news comes following Wednesday morning’s Park Board meeting.
During a series of meetings last month in which 12 parks and recreation centers were placed on a potential closure list, Council President William Parker, Pro Tem Wardine Alexander, the Mayor’s office, and community stakeholders worked tirelessly with the Park Board to modify schedules to keep them open to the public at least three days a week.
President Parker said the Council will continue working with the Park Board as well as community leaders to continue to provide recreational activities to residents in all of Birmingham’s 99 neighborhoods.
“I’m happy to announce that we will be keeping these sites open to the public as we continue to work our way through this public health crisis,” President Parker said.
Council President Pro Tem Wardine Alexander, who had four parks and recreation centers in her district on the potential closure list, said she’s encouraged by the collective effort to keep them open.
