PRESS RELEASE Monday, February 15, 2021
Contact: Kim Garner
Council President William Parker is hosting a Virtual Town Hall on Monday, February 15th at 6:00pm to discuss the COVID-19 vaccine roll out. Dr. Yocunda Clayton, Medical Director of Alabama Regional Medical Services and Christopher Mosley, Director of Marketing, Outreach, and Public Affairs for Alabama Regional Medical Services will be tonight’s panelists.
President Parker is passionate about equitable vaccine distribution for the residents of all of Birmingham’s 99 neighborhoods. The Alabama Department of Public Health recently released data detailing the demographic breakdown of people who have received the vaccine in state. Only 10.8% of the people who have received the vaccine are Black, as compared to 54.7% of White residents. An additional 29.4% are listed as not reporting their race and 3.5% are listed as unknown. Across the United States, African-American communities have been disproportionately impacted by the virus, which has put healthcare disparities on full display.
“We are entering into a very crucial time in our fight against COVID-19. It’s critical that vaccines are distributed as quickly and as efficiently as possible especially to groups who are more at risk for serious complications,” President Parker said. “Tonight’s town hall is an opportunity for all of our residents to ask questions and get answers from medical experts.”
The Virtual Town Hall will be live on the Birmingham City Council’s Facebook Page
