2nd Annual Sneaker Soiree: Let’s Talk Peace, Healing, and Public Safety

District 9 Councilor LaTonya Tate and District 6 Councilor Crystal Smitherman are hosting the second installment of the Sneaker Soiree this Saturday, October 14, 2023 at Boutwell Auditorium from 11AM to 2PM.  This is an event aimed at opening a dialogue with young people about public safety issues in their community.

Last year, Councilor Tate hosted the event at the Birmingham CrossPlex, which featured a panel of public safety experts that discussed conflict resolution and other similar topics. As a way to foster a comfortable and casual atmosphere for younger people, attendees are encouraged to wear their best sneakers.

“It’s no secret that we have an issue with gun violence in Birmingham, especially amongst our young people,” Councilor Tate said. “As elected leaders, we have to do whatever we can to let our younger generation understand that there are opportunities out there for them and violence is never the answer. Everyone in the community has to play a part in helping to stop the violence and this is one way we’re trying to reimagine how we address this issue in Birmingham.”

By partnering with Council President Pro Tem Smitherman, the event is expected to continue growing.  Hosting this at the Boutwell will offer more space and opportunities for attendees.

There will be giveaways and door prizes.  All ages are invited and encouraged to attend.
