Birmingham City Council President Pro Tem Crystal Smitherman Brings Pop-Up Farmers Markets to her District

In an effort to make fresh foods more accessible to her constituents, Birmingham City Council President Pro Tem Crystal Smitherman and her staff are organizing monthly Pop-Up Farmers Markets at three different locations throughout Birmingham’s District 6.

“Much of my district is considered a food desert; which means there is limited access to fresh vegetables and fruits within a reasonable distance from where my constituents live,” remarked Smitherman. “One of my main goals throughout my term as city councilor for District 6 is to help bridge the gaps in access to fresh foods and healthy lifestyle choices.”

Pro Tem Smitherman has been successful at enlisting a variety of Alabama farmers both near and far to attend her Pop-ups including Hamm Farms (Cullman), Pierce Farms (Clanton), Popwell Farms (Montgomery) Eastaboga Bee Company (Eastaboga), and Jones Valley Teaching Farm (Birmingham). This month’s Pop-up will also be attended by a variety of additional local vendors including Delectable Sensations offering homemade cakes, cookies, and baked goods, and The Plant Lady Café with vegan and gluten-free prepared foods and healthy juices,

The public is invited to the August 13 Pop-Up Farmers Market at the Memorial Park, 524 6th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35205 from 1:30 pm until 3:30 pm.
