Statement from Public Safety Chair LaTonya Tate on Celebratory Gunfire on the 4th of July

want to wish the residents of Birmingham a very happy and safe July 4th holiday weekend.  Unfortunately in the past, some people have chosen to celebrate by discharging firearms into the air.  Every year, Birmingham Police are burdened with hundreds, if not thousands of shots-fired calls on holidays like New Year’s Eve and the 4th of July.  On Monday, we’re asking our residents to celebrate responsibly.  Please consider your neighbors, family, friends, and pets before you participate in celebratory gunfire.  It is illegal, it is reckless, and it causes thousands of dollars in property damage.  It also has the potential to seriously injure or even kill someone if hit by a falling projectile.  Please refrain from celebratory gunfire and find another, safer way to celebrate this 4th of July.
