This coming Tuesday, September 15, the Birmingham City Council will be voting on a resolution, submitted by Council President William Parker, requesting that the Park Board withdraw an item that would close 12 sites throughout the city.

The Birmingham Park Board is scheduled to vote on the item this coming Wednesday, September 16 at 9 a.m.

Following a presentation during Thursday’s Special-Called Committee of the Whole meeting, Parker said he was outraged by what he described as the inequity of the parks and recreation center locations that were presented as potential closures.

The Birmingham City Council appoints all five seats to the Park Board, Parker explained, and there needs to be accountability for these decisions.

“We, the Council, are going to do whatever we need to do in order to prevent this from happening,” Parker said. “These park closures were presented to us on Thursday, and the Park Board is looking to move on this item on Wednesday. This resolution is a way for the Council to say that we need to look at alternative options and bring everyone to the table to discuss this serious matter.”

Council President Parker also sits on the Park Board and said he is going to continue working with his colleagues to find an alternative path forward.
