Meeting Day & Time:  1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 4:30 p.m.  – Birmingham City Hall – 3rd Floor, Council Chambers
The Public Safety, Transportation Committee recommends on matters regarding public safety, generally; Birmingham Police Department; Birmingham Fire Department; and Emergency Management.
Applications for liquor licenses are made through the ABC Board. The application is then forwarded to the Police Department where a background check is made on the applicant. The Police Department notifies Community Development and a letter is sent to the neighborhood president where the establishment will be located. The Planning & Zoning Division is notified and investigates for any zoning problems and required parking spaces. All information is then sent to the Public Safety Committee where the committee makes a recommendation to the full council. The Police Department, Zoning Division, Community Development, and the Mayor’s Office are all represented at this meeting.
The transportation portion of this committee recommends on matters pertaining to transportation, generally; airport and aviation; traffic engineering; parking facilities, and the Birmingham Transit Authority. Requests for items to be placed on the agenda should be made to the Committee Chairperson. Taxis and Jitney services are brought before the Transportation and Communication Committee for approval and items that are recommended for approval by the Committee are brought before the full Council.
The Committee also makes recommendation to the Council for wrecker service contracts in the City.
Additionally the committee makes recommendations for appointments to the following: Birmingham Cable Commission, the Parking Authority Board, and the Transit Advisory Committee. Appointments to the Birmingham Airport Authority are made by the Mayor.
